May 15: Wild Wild West
The Viaduct route last week included Lucky 13- the largest Draft number this season! It is hard to keep a good cyclist down. Two veteran Drafters pushed the human healing envelope for their return from maternity & medical leave. Welcome back Dan-yelly and the Human Metronome! 2 months after delivering Baby Adley, Dan-yelly is back in the saddle. 2 weeks after having knee surgery, the Human Metronome is back leading the pack. You two are an inspiration. The Short Pour proved the more exciting route last Monday. Exhausted and exhilarated, KiloWatt rehashed the details over an IPA at the Free House. Apparently, the ride was significantly delayed as Schubie become a life time member of the FLAT TIRE CLUB. There is speculation that the Tobacco City Cousin had grown lonely being the sole member of the 2017 chapter, and sought to ride behind the Short Pour group in hopes of spreading the flat tire contagion to an unsuspecting Drafter. Unsuspecting, perhaps, but not unprepared, team Leaders KiloWatt and Lads Digs indoctrinated Newbie Kristin into the methods for changing a flat. How many Drafters does it take to change a flat in 20minutes? I applaud the team effort. A team that changes a flat together, stays together. Or not. Ultimately, the tire and new tube failed to play nice together and Schubie headed home, deflated. Pit crews for the Tour de France have declared a state of emergency for their job security. The Short Pour was discouraged but not deterred and they headed beyond the city limits towards Dane. Unfortunately, the thin band of storms was tracking them. KiloWatt describes a single rain cloud with a tractor beam focused exclusively on the Short Pour. They dodged, swerved and otherwise tried to outmaneuver the rain cloud, but there was no escaping its precipitating furry.Perhaps as a peace offering from Mother Nature, KiloWatt was privy to the iridescent train of a peacock, displaying his extravagant plumage on Hylsop Road. I am definitely surrendering my Porter for the IPA next week.Make friends with your FedEx driver. The Hincapie Jersey delivery date is next week, and the package requires a signature. The Drafters are not the cycling only group fueled by beer. This is a very casual ride worth considering:
